Size is not everything. Here are ten of the smallest countries in the world. Some of them are rarely visited, except by collectors visas. Often remote islands, countries richer and poorer - the highest GDP in the world (almost) the lowest per capita - to delight the most jaded travelers.
Monaco 1, 1.95 km2
If you like the genre plush, you did not wrong principality. That of Monaco was established in 1297, after his fortress, which still dominates the sector, had been torn by François Grimaldi Italian rival faction. The famous independent state of 195 hectares, located on a narrow stretch of coast wonderfully picturesque, has long been a tax haven for the very rich and very famous. The actress Grace Kelly married Prince Rainier, is based in the Cathedral, in the heart of the old town of Monaco. The walking tour of the latter, beautifully preserved, is facilitated by public escalators and elevators, which make it possible to absorb the steep slopes. Treat your outfit if you do not want to disfigure.
Granada 2, 344 km2
This oval landmass called the Spice Island because of its high production of mace and nutmeg, home to some of the views of the most spectacular natural Caribbean. Majestic volcanic cliffs spring from a narrow coastal plain, surrounded by a lush tropical forest that forms the mountainous spine of Grenada (now under the auspices of Grand Etang National Park). Originally, this "Grand Etang" is also a crater which, according to legend, is bottomless - indeed, few would dare swim in its incredibly peaceful waters. Spectacular trails backcountry hikers lead to such wonders as the Concord Falls, while beach lovers prefer the Levera National Park.
Malta 3, 316 km2
Impossible to argue that there is nothing to do in Malta. Relative to its size, this tiny island of rock and limestone organizes a phenomenal number of festivals throughout the year, especially in summer. Include the Mediterranean Food Festival, the Malta Fireworks Festival, not to mention the jazz festival and the icing on the cake, a two-day event for the public to choose the national representative of the Eurovision Song Contest. When you have enough shared with your peers, relax on a nearly deserted island nearby, or explore inland to admire the megalithic remains, natives of this island colonized testimony.
4 San Marino, 61 km2
Due to its elevated position, the enclave of San Marino, in the heart of Italy, gives the impression walkers to scan an impenetrable mist and spectacular snow-capped Apennines through the window of a plane peaks. Founded in 301 AD by a mason named Marino, this rugged city-state is defined as the oldest republic in the world. A visit to the enclave, steeped in medieval history would be incomplete if we did not win walk three imposing fortresses perched on the cliffs. The oldest, Rocca Guaita, dates from the tenth century. Do not miss the chilling museum of torture, which uses diagrams to explain how the use of these horrible instruments.
