10 American parks off the beaten path -Part 2-

5 Hawai'i Volcanoes  (Hawaii)
Hawaii is far from being located off the beaten tourist track, but the Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park and volcanic wonders deserve more praise. The Big Island has five volcanoes of various ages overlapping each other, the highest in the world. Mauna Loa, it amounts to "only" 4,169 m above sea level, down to 5000 m further to the ocean floor, so gleefully beats Everest, which does is still not nothing. With its black sand beaches, old lava and pyroclastic flows, it is a national park where we see Earth at work.

6 Mesa Verde (Colorado)
The Rocky Mountains are the hallmarks of Colorado, and rightly so, but the tour guides often forget the Mesa Verde National Park and its rich Native American history. Near the Four Corners (intersection between Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona and Utah), the park has many archeological treasures that the history of the United States tends to ignore. Its assets include the amazing cliff dwellings of the Pueblo Indians, built in the thirteenth century, carved on four levels in the cliffs of the breathtaking canyons. Several are available, offering a fun tour that also illuminating.

7 Big Bend (Texas)
Peaks, ancient forests and bubbling geysers are not enough to summarize the major American parks. In the Deep South, nearly 400 km border between Texas and Mexico, Big Bend National Park contains geological and paleontological treasures. With differences in altitude from 550 m to 2400 m above sea level, the park boasts extreme weather, from the scorching desert deep canyons bordering the Rio Grande to cooler Chisos Mountains heights. Near the border, archaeological excavations have revealed that the area was already there millennia a highly coveted by men area.

Park Big Bend isolated is little used. The nearest airports are in Midland / Odessa (330 km) and El Paso (580 km), both in Texas.
