10 places where the planet trembles and roars -Part 1-

Tectonic plates, fault lines, lakes melt ... the fragile crust undergoes astonishing phenomena.

1 Anak Krakatau (Indonesia)
With 129 active volcanoes, Indonesia has the largest number of active volcanoes. This archipelago of 17 000 islands are strung out along the boundary between the Eurasian and Australian tectonic plates. The most imposing volcano, the Anak Krakatau (Child of Krakatau) caused the biggest explosion ever recorded. In 1883, its eruption, heard 3,000 miles away to Perth (Australia), equivalent to the energy of 13,000 Hiroshima atomic bombs. It has since subsided. Plumes of smoke rise above the turquoise waters of the Sunda Strait between Java to Sumatra. An ideal excursion boat in the moonlight.

Discover the volcanic islands of the archipelago in the dry season (April to October). Camping is allowed on the Krakatau. Arrange a visit or a cruise from Labuan on the west coast of Java.

2 La Soufrière (Guadeloupe)
One of nine active volcanoes in the region of the Lesser Antilles, "the old lady" as we nicknamed Soufriere, stands in the south of the island of Basse-Terre, Guadeloupe. Its lava dome to the rugged edges rises to 1467 m. Its last eruption was in 1976 This is one of the most visited natural attractions of the island. Various hiking trails crisscross the massive Soufriere, rocky landscape, chaotic and almost lunar, some of whom earn cracks and fumaroles of the summit. The fog often envelops the volcano late morning: go early to enjoy the view.

The parking lot of the Yellow-Bains, a path wins the former parking lot of the Savannah-to-Mules (1142 m), which has great hiking, including climbing the volcano (1 hour).

3 Laguna Botos, Poas volcano (Costa Rica)
Rising to 2,700 m, the Poas Volcano, Costa Rica, has the largest active crater in the world, measuring 1.6 km in diameter and 300 meters deep. The frequent eruptions of geysers, lakes of molten sulfur and steam clouds contribute to making hostile place. It feels much better on the edge of the beautiful nearby Laguna Botos, a freshwater lake in an extinct crater, created by accumulation of rainwater in a magma reservoir collapsed. The slopes of the volcano are covered with tropical forests with many birds including hummingbirds, toucans and endemic golden quetzal. The Escalonia Trail is a strenuous hike through the forest to reach the shores of this beautiful lake.

Airfield McMurdo Station is located 40 km from the summit. American planes and New Zealand, serving the site, take off from Christchurch.

4 Ice Cave on Ross Island (Antarctica)
Under the frozen slopes of Mount Erebus, an active volcano at the southern extreme of the planet, hides an amazing ice cave. This results from the geological formation volcanic vapor infiltration of a deep opening. On the surface, a tall chimney of ice born of the encounter between water vapor and icy air rises skyward. Dripping melted ice on the rocks boiling turns to steam which heats the cave and did a great sauna. The few visitors enjoy breathtaking views and enjoy a steam none.
